And now I find Twitter pretty useful

22 May 2008

Recently, everyone, especially techies, keeps talking loudly about a new start-up, Twitter, like a new phenomenon of the web.

Well, I've a been a member of the service since long. I had found, however, nothing much interesting in it. And of course, I'm not exceptional.

Many people don't even understand why Twitter is so appealing (others don't have the slightest clue as to what it is), but those that realize the true potential of Twitter will have another tool at their disposal to help them build their image, reputation, community, availability, etc.
One day(yesterday to be exact), I tried giving a message "hello" to a mysterious guy with nickname "twitter@twitter.com" in my GTalk's list. Suddenly, the message appeared on the status bar on the top of this blog(which had been usually done after I logged in its webpage, twitter.com, only). I once realized that I've also added my phone number as one of the two devices along with my GTalk account to the Devices section in my Twitter account.

Two devices: my phone number and GTalk account added the Devices section.

I started wondering if I could use my phone to do the same thing as I did with GTalk. I then snatched my phone, composing a short message, and sent to +447624801423. Surprisingly, the message also popped up in the status bar of my blog. Wow.. really cool!!

Looking on the right of the Devices section, Twitter says "Twitter really shines when you're away from your computer. By hooking up your mobile phone, you can receive updates from those you're following". Then, I jumped to see who I'm following. I chose On and Off for the Device updates for some people. A few minutes later, I received messages from Kanter, then Virak,.. alerting me on their current status through my phone.

Later on, by taking a sneak peek at a help page, I got some extra knowledge about commands to control Twitter via mobile phone. Virak kept telling me and others about his plan for Cloggers meet-up tomorrow(today). I've also sent some messages about my surprise over Twitter directly to him. We've all exchanged messages via our phone without touching PCs and without knowing our each other's phone numbers.

And now I find Twitter pretty useful. It's really an appealing service ;-)

Two images of two armies

19 May 2008

In two communist states like China and Vietnam, there's a propaganda "the army is children of the people(កងទ័ពជាកូនចៅប្រជាជន)". And I see this sounds right.

How about in Cambodia? To me, military is a symbol of intimidation or hatred.

Let's observe..!!

Why postal services in Cambodia are crazy??

16 May 2008

I remember when I wandered searching for KhmerOS's office in Phnom Penh, it took me about an hour. How crazy postal addresses in Cambodia are!! To me, they name their house addresses at their disposals or in accordance to the Chinese horoscopes. Moreover, most streets in Phnom Penh is named in numbers. This comes to my curiosity that who is able to remember hundreds of street in the city with numbers, and why don't we name the streets after Khmer heroes(although we already have some), Khmer temples, Khmer provinces' names...?

Most things sent via post office in Cambodia go vanish without trace. It's reasonable, if I were a postman, I might not wander street to street to seek the crazy addresses too. As the result, the postal services in Cambodia are less developed and gain less confident from its people.

Unlike Cambodia, Vietnam has more reliable postal services. You may find a post office nearby in any streets and in any provinces/cities. Most goods sent via the services always reach the recipients' hand.

Now and temporarily, I write my address as a settler in Vietnam down any official papers. And of course, I do this with Google Adsense :)
